(02/01/13) – Each year, thousands of kids go without seeing a dentist. Friday, a Mid-Michigan dental office took part in a national program to help children in desperate need of repair work or cleanings.

Courtney Peterman is a mom who was thrilled to get a free office visit for her 2-year-old daughter. “It can help save a lot of money, dental is expensive.”

Friday, at least 15 children received free dental work at Family Dental Group in Flint Township.

“I’ve taken phone calls where I’ve actually had moms who have cried when they’ve realized we’re doing this and not just cleanings but restorative needs as well,” said dental office manager Paget Spencer. “We have doctors on staff taking care of the needs.”

Tricia Eaton brought her 8-year-old son who has a chipped tooth. Eaton and her family don’t have dental insurance.

“We have not only health insurance that we have already and have to pay for every week, but dental is just another added expense and it’s become a hardship,” Eaton said.

Not only does this opportunity relief financial stress for families, it’s also a chance for the dental staff to educate families on low cost insurance plans available to families.

“The state offers a lot of different dental programs based on your income levels and we also offer an insurance plan here called Den-trite that makes it very affordable for your child to have dental care,” Spencer said.
